What is Shower Head?
A showerhead is a bathroom fixture that directs the flow of water in a bathroom shower. In a walk-in shower, water is directed to the showerhead as soon as the faucet is engaged. In a combination bathtub and shower, water is directed to the showerhead by a diverter on the faucet. A typical showerhead uses about 2.5 GPM (gallons per minute); however, more friendly models exist that can help cut water usage in half. Depending on the bathroom design, showerheads can be mounted to the shower walls or ceiling.
Advantages of Shower Head
Handheld Shower Head Offers Versatility
One of the primary advantages of a handheld shower head is its versatility. Unlike traditional fixed showerheads, a handheld option allows you to direct the water flow wherever you desire. Whether you want to target specific areas of your body for therapeutic purposes or simply enjoy the convenience of easily rinsing hard-to-reach places, a handheld shower head puts control at your fingertips.
Showering Without Getting Your Hair Wet
Showering without getting your hair wet is made possible with a handheld shower. The adjustable spray settings allow you to direct the water flow away from your hair, ensuring it stays dry while you clean the rest of your body. This is especially beneficial for those who have just styled their hair or are trying to preserve a hairstyle. With a handheld shower, you can enjoy a refreshing shower without worrying about ruining your hairdo or having to go through the hassle of washing and restyling it again.
Beneficial for Maintaining Personal Hygiene
Apart from convenience and adaptability, handheld shower heads are also beneficial for maintaining personal hygiene. They allow thorough cleaning in sensitive areas like underarms and feet, ensuring proper hygiene practices are followed consistently. Furthermore, these showers are perfect for individuals who require frequent wound care or have medical conditions that necessitate careful cleansing.
Handheld Shower Head Is Great for Parents
Parents also find handheld shower heads incredibly useful when it comes to bathing children. The ability to maneuver the water stream makes it easier to rinse shampoo out of little ones' hair. Additionally, many models offer different spray patterns such as gentle mist or pulsating massage modes that can make bath time more enjoyable for kids.
Wash Your Pets with Handheld Shower Head
Washing your pets with a handheld shower head is a convenient and efficient way to keep them clean. The adjustable spray settings allow you to control the water pressure, ensuring a gentle and comfortable bathing experience for your furry friends. The handheld design makes it easy to reach all areas of their body, including those hard-to-reach spots. With a handheld shower head, you can easily rinse away dirt and grime, leaving your pets feeling fresh and smelling great. Give your pets the spa treatment they deserve with a handheld shower head!
Advantages of Handheld Shower for People with Limited Mobility
For those with limited mobility, a handheld shower head can be life-changing. It provides independence by allowing individuals to bathe themselves without assistance. With adjustable height settings and flexible hoses, people with limited mobility can comfortably reach all parts of their bodies while seated or standing.
Rinse the Shower Area Conveniently with Handheld Shower
A handheld shower is also an easy and convenient way to rinse the shower area. With its flexible hose and adjustable spray settings, you can easily direct the water flow to thoroughly clean every corner of your shower. The handheld design allows you to reach high or low areas effortlessly, ensuring a thorough rinse and removing any soap residue or grime. Say goodbye to standing water or hard-to-reach spots with a handheld shower, making your cleaning routine quick and hassle-free.
Types of Shower Head
Detachable, Adjustable Shower Heads
In this category, there are many different shower heads to choose from. Some detachable shower heads are hand-held and offer a lot of variety in how you shower. With others, you can adjust the water pressure to suit your preferences, even changing it multiple times within a single shower.
Water-Saving Shower Heads
With our dry Australian climate and increasing water bills, more and more people are looking for ways to conserve water. With a water-efficient shower head, you can have confidence that you are doing your part to minimise your water usage and protect our environment each time you shower.
High-Pressure Shower Heads
This is a great option for fitness enthusiasts and others who experience muscle tightness and soreness.Because the water pressure is higher than with other shower head varieties, it creates a massaging effect, helping to soothe your muscles at the end of a long day or after a big workout.
Double Shower Heads
As the name suggests, this type of shower head actually includes two heads.Typically, one of the heads is detachable so that you can use it for hand-held spraying. If you are short on time in the mornings, this is a great option as you can wash your body at the same time as you rinse your hair.
Rain Showers
You’ll often find this type of shower head, also called a shower rose, at spas and resorts.Choosing a rain shower head can help you create a similarly luxurious environment in your own home. Instead of being mounted on the wall of your shower, this type of shower head mounts on the ceiling so there may be a some renovation required to relocate your plumbing to a suitable location.
Outdoor Shower Heads
As you might expect, these shower heads are designed specifically for outdoor showers.Unlike standard shower heads, they are built to withstand a variety of weather conditions, including rain, wind and constant exposure to the sun. If you have an outdoor shower, be sure to choose a shower head that is designed for that purpose to ensure a pleasurable outdoor showering experience for many years to come.
Waterfall Shower
With this type of shower head, the water pours over a ledge instead of spraying out through small holes. The result is a waterfall effect that feels incredibly luxurious. If you close your eyes, you might even think you’re out in the rainforest! A waterfall shower design does tend to increase your water usage, so it might not be suitable if you’re trying to conserve water.
Filtered Shower Heads
Water quality varies across Australia so you may wish to use a filtered shower head to remove any mineral deposits and other impurities from your water. This will make the water much gentler on your skin and hair, preventing them from getting overly dry and keep them smooth, clean and shiny.
Matching Your Shower Head to Your Shower Rail
Connection
First, take a look at how the shower head connects to the shower rail. There are different types of connections, like threaded connections (NPT) or sliding brackets. Make sure the shower head you choose has the same type of connection as your shower rail. That way, it will fit properly and stay securely in place.
Mounting
Next, think about how the shower head mounts to the shower rail. Some shower heads are designed to be mounted on the wall, while others are meant for ceiling installation. Pick a shower head that matches the mounting style of your shower rail. This ensures a stable setup and prevents any installation headaches.
Size & weight
Consider the size and weight of the shower head. If your shower rail is delicate or lightweight, choose a shower head that is not too heavy or bulky. This helps prevent strain on the shower rail and ensures a secure attachment.
Adjustability
If you want the flexibility to adjust the height or angle of the shower head, make sure your shower rail allows for it. Look for a shower head with adjustable features that can be positioned just the way you like it.
Design
Lastly, think about the design of your shower rail and choose a shower head that complements it. Whether your shower rail has a modern, traditional, or vintage style, finding a shower head that matches will create a cohesive look in your bathroom.
How Do You Adjust the Height of a Shower Head?

Adjustable Shower Head Extension Arm
The easiest and most affordable way to raise the height of your shower head is with an adjustable shower arm. This type of shower head extension arm attaches to your existing shower arm pipe, acting as an extension, and then you can attach your existing shower head. From there, you can elevate or even lower the height of your shower head by loosening up the wing-nut fittings and retightening them in your ideal position.
Swivel Ball Adapter
We recently added this part to this article because we found readers with shower head height issues didn’t always need a shower head extension arm, they actually had issues with the adjustability in their shower head. What we also found is that even though some of the other parts we recommend in this article work great at increasing shower head height, like the S-style shower arm, it presents an issue for shorter members in the household getting the shower sprayer to angle low enough to get decent coverage.
Shower Arm
This is not your typical shower head extension. The biggest benefit of this type of shower arm is its durability. The drawback is you have to remove your existing shower arm pipe from the wall. While replacing your shower arm isn't technical, it takes a bit more force to loosen it up from the wall and might turn some people away from this option. Although this is one of the sturdiest options, because it is fixed to your wall, it won't give you the most flexibility like the other options. However, it will give you a healthy balance of height and durability.
Shower Slide Bar
Last but not least, the most complex but most high-end touch - the shower slide bar. The slide bar mounts to your wall and then the hand held shower head attaches to the holder on the slide bar. If you’ve been wondering, “How do I make my shower head adjustable?” then this solution is for you. With a shower slide bar, you can easily raise the height of the shower head up or down by sliding the holder mount up or down the track of the slide bar pole.
How to Change a Shower Head
Before the Installation
The first step to replacing a shower head is removing the old one.
Try turning the shower head by hand counterclockwise to remove it. If you can remove it by hand, proceed to the next step. If not, keep reading for instructions on removing a shower head.
Wrap the jaws of slip-joint pliers with electrical tape or place a towel around the shower arm to protect the finish, and then grip the shower arm with the pliers.
Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and unscrew the old shower head.
Clean off any rust or mineral deposits, old tape or leftover sealant on the shower arm threads.
Wrap thread seal tape in a clockwise direction two or three times around the threads of the shower arm.
Press the tape into the threads.
How to Install a Combo Fixed-Mount and Hand-Held Shower Head
Attach the diverter that routes water to the shower head to the shower arm and hand-tighten.
Screw the fixed-mount shower head onto the end of the diverter in a clockwise direction and hand-tighten.
Attach the hand-held unit mount to the shower per the manufacturer’s directions.
Connect the flexible shower hose to the diverter and to the hand-held shower. Hand-tighten the connections.
Place the hand-held shower in the mount.
Turn on the water and divert water from the fixed to the hand-held unit and check for leaks.
If leaks occur, apply thread tape and carefully tighten with an adjustable wrench until there are no leaks.
How to Install a Fixed Shower Head
Screw the fixed shower head replacement onto the shower arm in a clockwise direction and tighten.
Turn on the water and check for leaks.
If leaks occur, wrap with thread seal tape and carefully tighten with an adjustable wrench until there are no leaks.
How to Install a Hand-Held Shower Head
Screw the hand-held shower mount onto the shower arm and tighten by hand.
Connect the flexible shower hose to the mount and to the hand-held shower. Hand-tighten the connections.
Place the hand-held shower head in the mount.
Turn on the water and check for leaks.
If leaks occur, apply thread seal tape and carefully tighten with an adjustable wrench until there are no leaks.
Why is My Shower Head Whistling?
Your shower head is loose
A common reason for a whistling shower head is a loose connection (this will also result in a leaking shower head). If your shower head isn't properly screwed on or tightened, water will leak out from the connection point. This leakage forces air through the line, which in turn causes those high-pitched whistling and squealing sounds. To fix this issue, all you need to do is tighten the connection point. Make sure to use a wrench or pliers so that you don't strip the threads. Once the shower head is hand-tight, use the wrench or pliers to give it an extra quarter turn.
The water pressure is too high
Your shower head might be whistling because the water pressure is too high and the shower head isn't meant for it. When water pressure is too high, it can cause the water to vibrate and create a high-pitched sound. If you have ever heard a teakettle whistle, it is the same principle. There are a few ways to fix this problem. One way is to install a water pressure regulator. This will help to reduce the amount of water pressure coming into your home, and therefore, reduce the amount of whistling from your shower head.
The washers in your shower head need to be replaced
If your shower head is still whistling after you've tightened the connection and cleaned the aerator, it's time to check the washers. Over time, the washers in your shower head can become worn out or damaged. When this happens, they are no longer able to create a water-tight seal, which can cause water to come out and create that annoying whistling sound. Plus, they will lead to a severely leaking shower head that wastes a lot of water and causes a mess. To replace the washers, simply unscrew the shower head and remove the old washers.
There's a hole in your shower head
Another possible reason for a whistling shower head is a hole or crack in the fixture itself. This can happen over time due to normal wear and tear and in some cases, due to manufacturer defects. If there is a hole in the shower head, water will leak out and create a whistling sound. Plus, your water bill will be higher because you're essentially paying for water that is going down the drain, thanks to your leaking shower head. If you have a hole or crack in your shower head, it is a sign that you will need to replace it with a new one.
Your shower head, shower hose, or shower pipe is clogged
We touched upon this point before, but now we'll look at it in depth. If your shower head is clogged or blocked, it can cause whistling or squealing sounds because air is being forced through a space that's too small for it. A clogged shower head can be due to mineral deposits, hard water, mould, or debris. Note that it's important to clean and unblock it regularly, and not just when a problem arises! A shower head is a breeding ground for mould and bacteria, so make its regular cleaning a part of your household chores.
What to Look for In a Quality Shower Head

Water Efficiency and Conservation
Choosing a shower head that uses less water can be a great way to conserve your water supply and lower your utility bill. Low flow shower heads, with their lower flow rates and water-saving features, are designed to minimise water consumption without sacrificing your shower experience. By choosing an efficient shower head, you can play your part in reducing water waste and lowering your water bill.

Enhanced Features and Upgrades
Shower heads have come a long way from traditional options. LED shower heads add a touch of fun and relaxation to your showers with their vibrant colours and soothing LED light effects. Some models even incorporate additional functionalities, such as built-in speakers or Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to enjoy your favourite tunes while getting refreshed. These are more “nice-to-haves” and definitely not necessities!

Other Factors to Keep in Mind
When exploring your different shower head options, there are a few other factors to consider. It needs to be compatible with your existing shower arm or shower rail, and it’s important to determine if additional plumbing adjustments are needed. Also, you need to consider the flow rate of your water, as it affects the amount of water used per minute.

Customisable Shower Experience
Modern shower heads come in a range of spray settings and different spray patterns, giving you the freedom to really personalise your shower experience. From a gentle rainfall-like flow to a powerful and invigorating high-pressure shower head, you can find the perfect setting that suits your showering preferences. Adjustable shower heads with diverter systems allow you to switch between different shower settings seamlessly, creating a spa-like atmosphere right in your own bathroom.

Consideration for Low Water Pressure
If you’re struggling with low water pressure in your home, selecting the right shower head can make a significant difference. High-pressure shower heads are specifically designed to optimise water flow in low-pressure situations. These types of shower heads use innovative technologies and strategically positioned nozzles to provide a powerful and invigorating shower, even when your water pressure is less than ideal.

Your shower valves are worn out
The valves in your shower head can also cause a whistling noise if they're damaged or worn out. If you have a single-valve shower, then there's only one valve to worry about. But if you have a dual-valve shower (one for hot water and one for cold water), then there are two valves that need to be in good working condition. To test if the shower valves are the problem, turn off both valves and see if the whistling noise stops. If it does, then you will need to replace the shower valves. If you have a shower head in your bathtub, then you also need to check the diverter valve.
How to Prevent Your Shower Head from Smelling Musty
Use distilled white vinegar
Every two weeks, fill a small bowl with distilled white vinegar and let the shower head soak in it for 30 minutes. This will help to prevent biofilm from building up and causing musty smells.
Dry the shower head after each use
Make sure to dry the surface of the shower head after each use — you can use a towel or microfiber cloth. This will help to prevent mildew and mould growth.
Use baking soda
Baking soda is a great natural cleaning agent. Make a paste with water and baking soda, and use it to scrub the shower head clean. Rinse it off afterward.
Use chlorine bleach
Chlorine bleach can also be used to clean shower heads and prevent mildew build-up. Fill a bowl with bleach and water (1:1 ratio), and let the shower head soak for 30 minutes. Rinse it off afterward.
Use lemon juice
You can also soak a shower head in lemon juice to clean it and prevent mildew build-up. Simply fill a bowl with lemon juice (or white vinegar) and let the shower head soak for 30 minutes before rinsing it off.
Descale your shower head regularly
If you live in a hard water area, it's important to descale your shower head regularly. This will help to prevent limescale build-up, which can encourage the growth of biofilm. You can use a store-bought shower head descaling solution, or you can make your own with white vinegar and water.
